a tip

work was a beast today. i actually felt like i worked in a daycare rather than a japanese restaurant. it seemed like everyone who came in brought not only their own toddler, but their neighbors' kids as well.

don't get me wrong, i love kids. but not when they're throwing udon and rice onto the floor in piles as big as a triceratops' poo (jurassic park reference). and today the piles were everywhere!

if you are going to bring your one, two, or three kids to a restaurant. and if you're going to just let them throw food everywhere. and if they're going to be screaming throughout the entire meal. and if they're going to also break one of our glasses. then i think your waitress may deserve a bit more than 5% tip.

the last family i had was four adults and one screaming kid who left me not only japanese food all over the floor, but also the cereal and cheese puffs that the parents brought in with them to feed the kid. their bill came to about 115 bucks. they left me 6 bucks tip. really? seriously?

here's a tip...10% tips are a time of the past. and even less than that makes you look like a douchebag. 20% is norm. waitresses work their asses off. so please, treat us well.

Did you get a new job? I once worked in a gift shop in a mall where the parents would let their little kids run all over the place. While getting paid little more than minimum wage to do all my regular work in a store, I was also required to keep a constant eye on these kids as if I was their babysitter. Nobody who works in customer service ever gets paid anything near what they're worth!

I just watched season 4 of LOST on DVD to gear up for the fifth season and I noticed that you made it into the extras. You were standing with Jorge once but I was very unsure about whether or not you were an Iraqi...

I work in a camera store where we also sell a lot of frames. I can't believe how people let their kids run around when there are dangerous glass objects everywhere! There are a lot more browsers with young toddlers right now because of the christmas season, and I feel like I am forever rounding them up, and also at the same time explain everything about a camera to the parents. It's like they just ignore everything their children are doing. A whole wall of 20x30 frames came crashing down on boxing day, than goodness the kid was not hurt! It seems like only when things get broken the parents then pay attention and then usually leave my store not even purchasing the camera I just spent 20 minutes telling them every detail about..

I also just watch my LOST season 4 special features and I swear I saw you in the audience close ups of the "LOST Symphony" special feature. That must have been an amazing night! I hope they bring that show on the road! I was a band geek in highschool, so listening to the LOST music as a symphony makes me very excited, lol.

yeah, the symphony was one the most incredible nights of my life.

giacchino is amazing at what he does.

He is amazing! I love the music on the show, It's really a character all on it's own. I hope someday I will be able to hear it preformed live.

While I've managed to not work in the restaurant industry, I've certainly lived vicariously through friends who have or still do. And after retail jobs for most of my working life, I can definitely say that your plea is a NICE one in comparison to the rants I've heard from others. Stories like these take me back to the days of my own childhood, where not only did my folks teach me the courtesy you show to people handling your food, but also the evil eyes and belt-threats I got if I were to act up in a restaurant.

Geez that’s awful. I would estimate that 99 % of the wait staff I have dealt with are conscientious and hard working. The lone 1% was a waiter who spilt soup on me and then he neglected to bring me a towel to clean up. I was shocked when I actually was given a bill for the meal.

God, Beth, stop whining. These people DESERVE to eat expensive sushi in a recession, and if they'd rather have a second glass of wine instead of paying you a decent tip, hey, give em a break! I'm sure they needed the wine much more than you needed to make a living wage. Sheesh.

You go girl....people who are cheap (or non-existent) tippers are the WORST...don't they know you get taxed on their bill and it could end up COSTING you to wait on them??????

My niece is a waitress/student/actress, and she has definitely made sure I am a generous tipper. Understand, I was never stingy, but now I go the extra. Your tips are your livelihood!

And there's nothing more annoying than parents who don't control their kids in public.

i feel your pain.. i used to work at a japanese place here in slc and man! rice should just be outlawed for kids under ten..
as a server, i've always tipped well..but as a mom of a 2 year old,i now throw an extra five or so bucks on top of the original tip..it's like a "thanks for putting up with us and cleaning my toddlers epic mess" bonus...
on another note, i also feel like if a table is done eating and they are just chillin out and taking up a table that they should give the server some extra cash for taking up the table.. like a five for every hour past the usual 30 or so minutes that most people stay...
ahhh...feels good to vent...
